Marvel Studios is poised to introduce a new chapter in the Spider-Man saga, with the fourth film in the series nearing a major development milestone. Marvel is currently in discussions with Destin Daniel Cretton, the acclaimed director of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, to take the helm of Spider-Man 4. Tom Holland is set to reprise his role as the iconic web-slinger.
Cretton, who has gained considerable acclaim for his work on Shang-Chi, would be stepping into a director’s chair previously occupied by Jon Watts, who directed the first three installments: Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home.
The script for the upcoming film will be penned by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, who have previously written for the Spider-Man franchise. Kevin Feige of Marvel Studios and former Sony executive Amy Pascal will return as producers. The film is anticipated to enter production in 2025, positioning it alongside other major Marvel releases such as The Fantastic Four: First Steps and two new Avengers sequels, Doomsday and Secret Wars. Holland may also make appearances in these upcoming Avengers films.
Cretton was once slated to direct Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, but the project was restructured following the departure of Jonathan Majors, leading to Cretton’s exit.
The most recent Spider-Man film, No Way Home, released in 2021, was a massive success, grossing over $1.9 billion worldwide. The film concluded with Spider-Man’s secret identity being erased from public memory, setting the stage for future storylines.
