New Film ‘Saturday Night’ Set for Theatrical Release

The trailer for “Saturday Night,” a film detailing the turbulent birth of the legendary TV sketch comedy show “Saturday Night Live,” has been unveiled. Directed by Jason Reitman, known for hits like Up in the Air and Juno, the film delves into the dramatic behind-the-scenes events leading up to the inaugural broadcast of “Saturday Night Live” on October 11, 1975. Reitman co-wrote the screenplay with Gil Kenan.

The film boasts an impressive cast, with Cory Michael Smith portraying Chevy Chase, Dylan O’Brien as Dan Aykroyd, Matthew Rhys as George Carlin, Nicholas Braun as Jim Henson, and Willem Dafoe as David Tebet. The ensemble also includes Gabriel LaBelle, Rachel Sennott, Ella Hunt, Emily Fairn, Matt Wood, Lamorne Morris, Kim Matula, Finn Wolfhard, Cooper Hoffman, Andrew Barth Feldman, Kaia Gerber, Tommy Dewey, J.K. Simmons, Jon Batiste, and Naomi McPherson.

“Saturday Night” premiered to acclaim at the Telluride Film Festival on September 1, 2024. The film has been praised for its stellar cast, engaging script, and meticulous craftsmanship. Due to strong early reactions, the film’s release strategy has been adjusted. Initially set for a wide release on October 11, 2024, “Saturday Night” will now begin with a limited platform release, starting in Los Angeles, New York, and Toronto on September 27, 2024. This will be followed by a limited U.S. release on October 4, 2024, before its broader U.S. debut on October 11, 2024.

Originally named NBC Saturday Night, the show’s debut episode was hosted by George Carlin and established the format of comedy sketches that lampoon contemporary American politics and culture. “Saturday Night Live” is currently celebrating its fiftieth season. The film “Saturday Night” is scheduled for release in Australian cinemas on October 31, 2024, under Sony Pictures.
