Michael Felker makes his feature directorial debut with Things Will Be Different, a sci-fi thriller that blends elements of mystery and family drama. The film, which marks Felker’s first foray into feature filmmaking, features a complex narrative involving estranged siblings caught up in a suspenseful puzzle box scenario.
Magnet Releasing has announced that Things Will Be Different will premiere in theaters on October 4, 2024, with a simultaneous day-and-date release.
The plot centers on siblings Joseph and Sidney, portrayed by Adam David Thompson and Riley Dandy, respectively. After a heist goes wrong, the pair retreats to a secluded safe house, only to discover that their refuge is not as deserted as they believed. The film explores themes of familial relationships and personal redemption through a lens of sci-fi and noir influences.
Felker, who also served as the film’s editor, expressed his vision for the project, stating, “I made Things Will Be Different for fans of thrillers, noir, and thought-provoking science fiction. It’s a complex mystery with a strong emotional core inspired by my own family experiences. The performances by Adam David Thompson and Riley Dandy are outstanding; their chemistry as siblings is truly convincing. I hope audiences will engage with the film’s mysteries, either by developing their own theories or by enjoying the unpredictable narrative.”
The film also features Chloe Skoczen, Justin Benson, Jori Lynn Felker, and Sarah Bolger in supporting roles.
Felker’s experience in editing genre films is notable, having worked on acclaimed titles like Something in the Dirt, Synchronic, The Endless, and Spring—all collaborations with directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead. Things Will Be Different fits well within this genre tradition, presenting a fractured sibling dynamic set against a backdrop of metaphysical intrigue.
Reviewing the film at SXSW, critics noted its strong execution, highlighting Felker’s effective use of time manipulation to explore the complex relationship between the two main characters. The film has been described as an “accomplished, affecting feature directorial debut” that smartly leverages its sci-fi elements to probe deep familial themes.
