France’s official submission for the Academy Awards, “The Count of Monte Cristo,” will debut in U.S. theaters on December 20, 2024. Samuel Goldwyn Films is gearing up to campaign for the film across all categories, including Best Picture. Following its initial release, the film will be rolled out nationwide.
Adapted from Alexandre Dumas’s classic novel, the film stars Pierre Niney as Edmond Dantès, a young man wrongfully imprisoned on his wedding day. After spending 14 years in the Château d’If, Dantès escapes and adopts the persona of the Count of Monte Cristo to seek vengeance against those who betrayed him.
Directed and written by Alexandre de La Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte, the film also features Anaïs Demoustier and Anamaria Vartolemei in prominent roles.
“The Count of Monte Cristo” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, receiving a lengthy standing ovation and positive critical acclaim. It will make its U.S. debut at the Hamptons International Film Festival before appearing at additional events, including the American French Film Festival in Los Angeles.
Currently holding a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film has sold over 8 million tickets in France and grossed more than $75 million internationally, with several major markets yet to be explored.
Variety’s Peter Debruge praised the film as “timeless and thrillingly new,” noting in his review that it is executed with the elegance of classic Hollywood epics and remains highly relevant in today’s climate of political and personal conflicts.
