Director Adam Wingard is set to return to his action-thriller roots with the forthcoming film Onslaught. Actress Adria Arjona, known for her role in Hit Man, is in the final stages of negotiations to star in the film and also serve as an executive producer.
The project has been acquired by A24, with Wingard directing and his frequent collaborator Simon Barrett penning the screenplay. Wingard and Barrett are recognized for their work on The Guest and You’re Next, and are now bringing their creative synergy back to a new venture.
Details about Onslaught remain closely guarded, but it was described as a “gonzo action horror thriller” reminiscent of Wingard’s earlier, original films. This marks a shift from Wingard’s more recent large-scale projects, such as Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong, returning to the distinct style of his earlier works.
Sources reveal that in Onslaught, Adria Arjona will portray a mother who must rely on her specialized skills to safeguard her family after encountering a menace that has escaped from a secret military facility.
The film’s producing team includes Aaron Ryder and Andrew Swett from Ryder Picture Company (RPC), Alexander Black from Lyrical Media, Wingard and Jeremy Platt from Breakaway Civilization, and Simon Barrett. Additionally, Lyrical Media’s Jon Rosenberg and Natalie Sellers will join A24 in an executive producer capacity.
Wingard’s previous directorial credits include A Horrible Way to Die, V/H/S, V/H/S/2, and Blair Witch, all of which were scripted by Barrett. Barrett, who recently made his directorial debut with Séance, is also working on the upcoming film Azrael, featuring Samara Weaving.
