Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut, Woman of the Hour, is set to premiere on Netflix in the U.S. on October 18. The film’s official teaser trailer has been released this morning.
Set in 1978, the thriller explores the chilling story of serial killer Rodney Alcala, who infamously appeared as a bachelor on the TV show The Dating Game. Kendrick, who also stars in the film, takes on this unsettling tale that intertwines true crime with the cultural backdrop of the 1970s.
In her four-star review for Bloody Disgusting, Meagan Navarro praises Kendrick’s debut, noting its effective blend of horror and humor with a nonlinear narrative. Navarro commends Kendrick’s vision for creating an unsettling experience while tackling gender dynamics and the true crime genre with both suspense and wit.
Kendrick plays Cheryl Bradshaw, a struggling actress whose life takes a dark turn when she appears on The Dating Game and encounters Alcala, portrayed by Daniel Zovatto. The film also stars Nicolette Robinson and Autumn Best.
Written by Ian MacAllister McDonald, Woman of the Hour is based on a Black List script that was once considered by Netflix before being abandoned, marking a significant comeback for the project.
