Sir Steve McQueen’s latest film, “Blitz,” chronicles the harrowing journey of a 9-year-old boy named George (Elliott Heffernan) during World War II in London. Faced with the dangers of the war, his mother, Rita (Saoirse Ronan), makes the difficult decision to send him to safety in the English countryside. Defiant and determined to reunite with his mother and grandfather, Gerald (Paul Weller), in East London, George embarks on an adventure fraught with peril, while Rita desperately searches for her missing son.
Academy and BAFTA Award-winning director McQueen helms the film, showcasing a talented cast that includes Academy Award nominee Ronan and newcomer Heffernan. The ensemble also features Harris Dickinson, Benjamin Clementine, Kathy Burke, Weller, Stephen Graham, Leigh Gill, Mica Ricketts, CJ Beckford, Alex Jennings, Joshua McGuire, Hayley Squires, Erin Kellyman, and Sally Messham.
Produced by McQueen’s Lammas Park in collaboration with Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner of Working Title Films, Arnon Milchan, Yariv Milchan, and Michael Schaefer for New Regency, the film boasts a distinguished production team, including producers Anita Overland and Adam Somner.
McQueen collaborates once again with key creatives from his past projects, including production designer Adam Stockhausen (“12 Years a Slave,” “Widows”), costume designer Jacqueline Durran (“Small Axe”), and composer Hans Zimmer (“12 Years a Slave”). The film’s cinematography is handled by Yorick Le Saux (“Little Women”), with makeup design by Naomi Donne (“No Time to Die”).
“Blitz” promises to be a poignant exploration of bravery and familial bonds amid the backdrop of one of history’s darkest chapters.
