by Barbara

After nearly 30 novels, Kay Scarpetta, the renowned chief medical examiner from Patricia Cornwell’s books, is set to make her debut on the small screen. Prime Video has officially greenlit a series adaptation, ordering two seasons to kick off this exciting project.

Interest in a Scarpetta series began to rise in 2023, Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis expressing interest in the role. In September, these rumors materialized as Kidman, Curtis, and a talented cast were confirmed for the show.

Who is Kay Scarpetta?

Scarpetta first appeared in Cornwell’s 1990 novel Postmortem, where readers met the intelligent and dedicated chief medical examiner for Virginia. Described as a petite blonde with perfectionist traits, Scarpetta also has a passion for cooking, particularly Italian cuisine. Cornwell drew inspiration for the character from Marcella Farinelli Fierro, MD, the now-retired Virginia Chief Medical Examiner.

After resigning as chief medical examiner in 2000’s The Last Precinct, Scarpetta took on roles as a private forensic consultant and later became head of the National Forensic Academy in Florida. The supporting cast includes Ariana DeBose as Scarpetta’s niece Lucy, Bobby Cannavale as former detective Pete Marino, Simon Baker as FBI profiler Benton Wesley, Rosy McEwen as a younger Scarpetta, and Jake Cannavale as a younger Pete Marino.
