Maslow Entertainment has unveiled the trailer for its highly anticipated Australian film, The Correspondent, featuring Richard Roxburgh in the lead role. Set to hit Australian cinemas on December 26, 2024, the film is inspired by the remarkable true story of Australian war correspondent Peter Greste, who was arrested and imprisoned in Egypt in 2013.
The Correspondent presents a gripping biographical thriller that delves into the relentless pursuit of truth and the resilience of the human spirit. The narrative follows Greste, who, while covering the news desk in Cairo during the Christmas holidays, finds himself accused of terrorism and imprisoned.
Caught in a dangerous game involving corrupt officials and deep-rooted rivalries, Greste becomes the focus of an international news story. With only his wits and unexpected allies to rely on, he must confront a brutal regime to secure his freedom and survive.
Directed by Kriv Stenders, known for Red Dog, the film features a screenplay by Peter Duncan, based on Greste’s memoir, The First Casualty. Roxburgh stars alongside an ensemble cast, including Rahel Romahn, Julian Maroun, Mojean Aria, Fayssal Bazzi, and Yael Stone, with John Bell and Anna Volska portraying Greste’s parents, Lois and Juris Greste.
The film will have its World Premiere at the Adelaide Film Festival on October 23, 2024, where it will be showcased as the Opening Night film. Producer Carmel Travers expressed her honor in telling Greste’s story at a time when journalism faces significant challenges. “Working with an extraordinary team both in front of and behind the camera, under the masterful direction of Kriv Stenders, has been a pure joy. It is a privilege to share the story of a remarkable Australian that resonates worldwide,” she stated.
The Correspondent has received substantial production support from Screen Australia in collaboration with Screen NSW through the Made in NSW Fund and the Regional Filming Fund. Additional financing has been provided by Jovial Planet Productions, Spectrum Entertainment, Dreamlight Studio, the Adelaide Film Festival Investment Fund, Fulcrum Media Finance, and High Pass Holdings, with production by Pop Family Entertainment.
Catch The Correspondent in cinemas on December 26, 2024.
