Fox’s new series Murder in a Small Town delves into a chilling murder while also exploring a budding romance between police chief Karl Alberg, portrayed by Rossif Sutherland, and local librarian Cassandra Lee, played by Kristin Kreuk.
Executive producer Ian Weir assures audiences that the series will feature a variety of crimes each week, not solely focusing on homicides. “There’s a story that’s built around an abduction,” Weir explains. “Another narrative appears to involve murder but unfolds to reveal an entirely different truth.” He emphasizes that despite the dark themes, the town of Gibson remains a picturesque place, noting, “Not everybody in Gibson gets murdered.”
The chemistry between Karl and Cassandra, dubbed #Karlandra by fans, is a key attraction of the series. Their relationship quickly escalates in the premiere, characterized by both romance and conflict over the episode’s murder plot. As tensions rise, Karl attempts to mend their relationship by inviting Cassandra to see his new kittens, a gesture meant to rekindle their bond. However, Weir humorously notes, “I’m afraid we don’t actually see the kittens on screen.”
As their relationship develops, complications arise. Cassandra will become entwined in an investigation linked to an old friend who is marginally connected to a tragedy. However, Weir emphasizes that Cassandra won’t be a mere sidekick to Karl’s crime-solving efforts. “It’s not that kind of show,” he states.
The 90-minute premiere concludes with a heartfelt tribute to Sutherland’s late father, Emmy Award winner Donald Sutherland, who passed away in June at the age of 88.
