The Austin Film Festival has announced an impressive lineup for its 31st edition, featuring several contenders for the upcoming Oscar race. Among the highlights are Justin Kurzel’s The Order, Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, and Tim Fehlbaum’s September 5.
The Order, a neo-Nazi crime thriller starring Jude Law and Nicholas Hoult, will be showcased as a Centerpiece Film. Writer Zach Baylin and star Tye Sheridan are scheduled to attend the screening. The festival, running from October 24 to 31, will kick off with Malcolm Washington’s The Piano Lesson, which features an all-star cast, including Samuel L. Jackson, John David Washington, and Danielle Deadwyler. Co-writer Virgil Williams, who collaborated on this Netflix stage-to-screen adaptation produced by Denzel Washington, will also be present.
In addition to these films, Maria, a biopic about Maria Callas directed by Pablo Larrain and starring Angelina Jolie, will also screen at the festival. This year’s world premieres include Crossword, a paranoia thriller co-written, directed by, and starring Michael Vlamis in his directorial debut; The Fetch, a folk-horror film directed by J.C. Doler and featuring Robert Longstreet; and Operation Taco Gary’s, a conspiracy comedy with an ensemble cast including Simon Rex and Brenda Song, directed by Michael Kvamme.
The festival will also host world premieres for Ravens, directed by Mark Gill, which tells the story of famed Japanese photographer Masahisa Fukase and his wife Yoko; La Gloria, directed by J.T. Walker and starring David Morse; and Silent Notes, directed by Toni Comas and featuring Daniel Durant.
A special screening of Pixar’s upcoming original series Dream Productions, a spinoff from the Inside Out film franchise, is also slated for the festival. This series, set between the events of Inside Out and Inside Out 2, explores the “dream factory” within the mind of the character Riley and is set to debut on Disney+ in 2025.
Renowned as a premier film festival celebrating the contributions of writers and filmmakers to film, television, and new media, the Austin Film Festival will feature its annual Writers Conference this year. Robin Swicord will receive the 2024 Bill Wittliff Award for Screenwriting, recognizing her work on notable projects such as Memoirs of a Geisha and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, as well as her collaboration with Ava DuVernay on the Netflix miniseries When They See Us.
