‘Apartment 7A’ : A Lackluster Prequel Fails to Justify Its Existence

by Barbara

The release of Apartment 7A, a prequel to the iconic horror film Rosemary’s Baby, raises questions about its necessity. Originally conceived during Disney’s acquisition of Fox, the film seems driven by a desire to populate Hulu with content rather than by creative demand. While The First Omen managed to captivate audiences with its visual style and inventive scares, Apartment 7A struggles to find its footing, appearing more as an underwhelming addition on Paramount+ than a worthy cinematic experience.

Set in the lead-up to Roman Polanski’s classic, Apartment 7A follows Terry Gionoffrio, portrayed by Julia Garner. A talented but injured dancer, she is taken in by the sinister Castevet couple, portrayed by Dianne Wiest and Kevin McNally. As the film unfolds, it explores themes of ambition and the dark allure of the entertainment industry, echoing the predicaments faced by women in the 1960s. However, unlike its predecessor, which poignantly depicted a woman’s isolation and despair, this film fails to evoke genuine horror or engagement.

Despite Garner and Wiest delivering commendable performances, the narrative offers little surprise or suspense. The film’s reliance on clichéd dream sequences and lack of atmospheric depth diminish its impact. Director Natalie Erika James, known for her work on Relic, seems to lose the intricate texture that made her debut compelling.

Ultimately, Apartment 7A appears to be a missed opportunity—an attempt to capitalize on nostalgia without adding meaningful context or fresh perspective. As it arrives on Paramount+ on September 27, viewers are left wondering if this prequel was ever truly needed.
