Idris Elba is set to star and executive produce a television adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s literary classic, Things Fall Apart. Elba will portray Okonkwo, the leader of the Igbo village Umuofia, who grapples with his intolerance for weakness amid the arrival of British missionaries and the upheaval of colonial rule.
Elba has recently launched a production company, 22Summers, in partnership with Gina Carter. This company will serve as an executive producer for the series, alongside David Oyelowo and Amanda N’Duka under Yoruba Saxon. Additional executive producers include Ben Forkner, Dayo Ogunyemi, and Achebe Masterworks, which is managed by Achebe’s family estate.
Achebe’s Things Fall Apart is a globally renowned work celebrated in both academia and literature, exploring pre-colonial African culture and the Igbo tradition. The novel, first published in 1958, was Achebe’s debut and earned him the Margaret Wong Memorial Prize. Throughout his career, he received numerous accolades, including the Man Booker International Prize.
While Elba’s casting has excited some, it has also sparked controversy. Critics on social media have expressed concerns regarding his suitability for the role due to his non-Nigerian ethnic heritage. Elba, born in London to a Sierra Leonean father and Ghanaian mother, faces scrutiny about his ability to authentically portray the character.
Nollywood, Nigeria’s vibrant film industry, has previously adapted Things Fall Apart, featuring acclaimed Igbo actor Pete Edochie as Okonkwo. Edochie’s performance has set a high standard, leading some fans to worry about the authenticity of Elba’s portrayal, particularly regarding the Igbo accent.
Despite the backlash, some members of Achebe’s family support Elba’s casting. Nwando Achebe, Achebe’s daughter and CEO of Achebe Masterworks, expressed her excitement, wishing her father could witness the adaptation. Chidi Achebe, his son, shared his enthusiasm on LinkedIn, announcing the project’s long-awaited development.
As of now, no writer has been assigned to the series, nor has Oyelowo’s role been finalized. However, there is hope among the Nigerian diaspora for increased participation of Nollywood actors, which could elevate the industry’s global presence.
