Thunderbolts’ Place in the MCU Timeline Revealed

by Barbara

Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) can finally pinpoint the placement of the upcoming film Thunderbolts within the franchise’s evolving timeline. As new projects are released, audiences eagerly anticipate how each fits into the greater narrative tapestry of Marvel’s superhero saga.

The latest revelation regarding the timeline comes in the wake of the recent trailer for Thunderbolts, which debuted key details about the film’s setting. At approximately one minute into the teaser, a scene featuring Wyatt Russell’s John Walker scrolling through his phone provides context. The article he reads references the downfall of his US Agent persona, which occurred “a few short years ago,” suggesting that Thunderbolts is set a few years after the events depicted in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Given that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is confirmed to take place in 2024, it is reasonable to estimate that Thunderbolts will unfold between 2026 and 2029. Currently, Agatha All Along holds the title of the most recent entry on the MCU timeline, set in 2026. If Thunderbolts falls within the 2026-2029 range, it could potentially surpass Agatha All Along as the most current installment in the MCU.

Contextualizing Thunderbolts within the MCU

Understanding Thunderbolts’ placement requires considering the previous appearances of its star-studded cast, which includes Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, and more. Notably, Pugh’s Yelena Belova last appeared in the Disney+ series Hawkeye, which is set during Christmas 2024. This timeline indicates that several years will have passed for her character by the time Thunderbolts arrives.

Additionally, Pugh’s co-stars from Black Widow, David Harbour and Olga Kurylenko, were last seen in the 2017 film, meaning they will also have a significant time gap since their last on-screen appearances. Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Val, who was last featured in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, has a timeline set a couple of years prior to Thunderbolts, which is slated for release on May 2, 2025. Moreover, Hannah John-Kamen’s Ghost was last seen in Ant-Man and the Wasp, which took place in 2018.

As anticipation builds for Thunderbolts, fans are left to ponder how these characters will evolve and interact in this next chapter of the MCU.
