The European Film Academy (EFA) has announced the five animated films nominated for the 37th annual European Film Awards, recognizing the best in pan-European animated features. 1. Flow by Gints Zilbalodis (Latvia, France, Belgium)
  2. Living Large by Kristina Dufková (Czech Republic, France, Slovakia)
  3. Savages by Claude Barras (Switzerland, France, Belgium)
  4. Sultana’s Dream by Isabel Herguera (Spain, Germany, India)
  5. They Shot the Piano Player by Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal (Spain, France, Netherlands, Portugal, Peru)

This year’s line-up showcases remarkable talent, with two films from directors who have previously taken home the EFA feature animation award. Savages, a stop-motion film by Claude Barras, follows his 2016 win for My Life as a Zucchini. Meanwhile, the hand-drawn They Shot the Piano Player reunites Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal, who won in 2011 for Chico and Rita.

Another standout is Flow by Gints Zilbalodis, which premiered at the Un Certain Regard sidebar of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival and garnered significant acclaim at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June. It emerged as a top winner at Annecy, earning more awards than any other competing title this year.

The two remaining contenders—Sultana’s Dream by Isabel Herguera and Living Large by Kristina Dufková—both saw success at Annecy as well. Sultana’s Dream took home the Contrechamp Grand Prix, while Living Large secured the Contrechamp Jury Award.

The nominees were selected by a committee composed of members from both the European Film Academy and CARTOON, the European Association of Animation Film.

Nominations for the short film category, which includes both animation and live-action films, have not yet been announced.

The 2024 European Film Awards will take place on Saturday, December 7, in Lucerne, Switzerland, marking the first time the event will be held in the country.
