Hollywood’s Return to Gleeful Absurdity with “The Gutter”

by Barbara

In an era where Hollywood has largely moved away from the delightfully silly comedies reminiscent of classics like “Dodgeball,” the upcoming release of “The Gutter” stands out as a refreshing throwback to this beloved subgenre. Magnolia Pictures has released a new trailer for the film, which is sure to transport viewers back to 2004, delivering a hit of nostalgia and laughter.

“The Gutter” features Shameik Moore, known for his role in “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” as Walt, a lovable slacker who stumbles upon a job at a bowling alley. In an unexpected turn of events, Walt discovers he possesses an extraordinary talent for bowling. With the assistance of barfly Skunk, played by Emmy nominee D’Arcy Carden from “The Good Place,” he aims to dominate the Super League of Bowlers (SLOB) in a bid to save the bowling alley from impending foreclosure. However, Walt faces a formidable challenge in the form of legendary bowler Linda “The Crusher” Curson, portrayed by Academy Award winner Susan Sarandon, who is less than thrilled about the upstart’s ambitions. The film promises a barrage of outrageous humor, including memorable lines such as Sarandon’s quip: “Walter could be something someday, like a janitor or a garbageman in Wakanda.”

The film premiered at the South by Southwest festival, garnering positive reviews. Mashable’s Kristy Puchko praised it, stating, “I can’t remember the last time a comedy this stupid was so smart in its jokes.”
