Martha Stewart’s remarkable journey is the focus of Netflix’s upcoming documentary, Martha, directed by RJ Cutler. The trailer for the film was released recently, revealing a comprehensive look at Stewart’s rise to prominence, her criminal conviction, and her subsequent efforts to rebuild her life following her time in prison. The documentary is set to premiere on October 30.
In the trailer, Stewart reflects on her past, stating, “I was on top of the world.” However, her success took a dramatic turn when she was indicted on criminal charges linked to insider trading. Stewart was ultimately found guilty of obstruction of justice and making false statements to investigators, resulting in a five-month prison sentence.
Expressing her frustrations about the legal proceedings, Stewart remarked, “I was a trophy for these idiots. I was dragged into solitary, no food, no water… Those prosecutors should’ve been put into a Cuisinart and turned on high.”
Martha draws on extensive interviews with Stewart, as well as insights from her inner circle and a wealth of her private archives, including diaries, letters, and previously unseen footage. The film not only explores Stewart’s upbringing in a working-class family but also prompts viewers to reevaluate the scandal that led to her imprisonment. Furthermore, it celebrates her remarkable reinvention as a pioneering influencer who continues to engage and inspire new generations of fans.
The documentary was produced by Jane Cha Cutler, Alino Cho, Austin Wilkin, R.J. Cutler, and Trevor Smith, with executive production from Elise Pearlstein and Mark Blatty.
