GKIDS has officially released the trailer for The Colors Within, an upcoming coming-of-age music anime set to hit U.S. theaters. The film centers on the journey of three high school students who form a band and discover the bonds of friendship through their shared love of music.
The official synopsis describes the protagonist, Totsuko, as a high school student with a unique ability to perceive the “colors” associated with people’s emotions. She cherishes one color above all others, which belongs to her classmate Kimi, who emanates the most beautiful hue. Despite not playing any instruments, Totsuko teams up with Kimi and Rui, a quiet music lover they encounter in a quaint used bookstore. The trio practices in an old church on a secluded island, where their musical endeavors not only deepen their friendships but also spark romantic feelings. The central question remains: will they uncover their true “colors”?
The film is set to debut in U.S. theaters on December 13, 2024, in Los Angeles, with a nationwide rollout scheduled for January 13, 2025. The Colors Within had its world premiere earlier this year at the Annecy International Film Festival.
Directed by Naoko Yamada, known for her work on A Silent Voice, the screenplay is penned by Reiko Yoshida, celebrated for Violet Evergarden. The score is composed by Kensuke Ushio, recognized for his contributions to Chainsaw Man. The film features character design and animation direction by Takashi Kojima and is produced by Science SARU, the studio behind Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, in collaboration with Story inc., known for Your Name, Weathering With You, and Suzume. The production is led by Genki Kawamura, producer of Your Name.
