Pedro Almodóvar is gearing up for the release of his latest feature film, The Next Room, this October. Marking a significant milestone, this film is notable for being Almodóvar’s first production entirely shot in English, following his recent work, Strange Way of Life (2023).
In The Next Room, Tilda Swinton takes center stage once again, following her collaboration with the director on the medium-length film The Human Voice (2020). Swinton portrays Martha, a war correspondent who navigates the complexities of being an “imperfect mother” to her resentful daughter.
Joining Swinton in this international ensemble cast is Julianne Moore, who plays Ingrida, Martha’s childhood friend. After their paths diverged, Ingrida transitioned from magazine work to become a novelist focused on autofiction.
The film explores the reconnection of Swinton and Moore’s characters, who reunite after years apart under peculiar and poignant circumstances.
The Next Room features a talented supporting cast, including John Turturro as Damian Cunningham, Alessandro Nivola, Juan Diego Botto, Melina Matthews, Raúl Arévalo, Vicky Luengo, Esther McGregor, Alex Høgh Andersen, and Alvise Rigo.
Early reviews of the film have praised Almodóvar for his insightful exploration of mortality—a theme he has skillfully examined in previous works. Critics have also highlighted the outstanding performances from the cast and Almodóvar’s ability to maintain his signature directorial style, even as the narrative unfolds in New York City.
Based on Sigrid Nunez’s novel What Is Your Torment, The Next Room has a runtime of 107 minutes and is set to premiere in theaters next week, on Friday, October 18.
