Sony Pictures has officially announced the release date for its highly anticipated film adaptation of Until Dawn, following director David F. Sandberg’s confirmation that filming has wrapped up. The movie, produced by Screen Gems and PlayStation Productions, is set to hit theaters on April 25, 2025. This release date comes just a few months shy of the game’s 10th anniversary, which originally launched in August 2015.
The box office landscape looks promising for Until Dawn, as it will face limited competition, with only Ben Affleck’s The Accountant 2 scheduled for the same date.
The film boasts a strong team of horror talent. Gary Dauberman, known for his work on Annabelle, The Nun, It, and It: Chapter Two, has crafted the latest version of the script, while Blair Butler wrote an earlier draft. Sandberg, acclaimed for his horror films Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation, also directed Shazam! and its sequel.
While specific plot details remain under wraps, it has been confirmed that Until Dawn will be rated R and described as a “terrifying love letter to the horror genre.” The cast includes Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino, Ji-young Yoo, Belmont Cameli, Odessa A’zion, Maia Mitchell, and Peter Stormare, who will reprise his role as Dr. Hill from the game.
Inspired by the game’s premise, which involves eight frightened teens navigating life-or-death decisions in a choose-your-own-adventure format, it will be intriguing to see how this interactive aspect is translated into the film.
Since its announcement in January, Until Dawn has progressed swiftly through development, joining a growing list of major video game adaptations currently in the works.
