Horror Franchise “Creep” Expands to TV with New Series “The Creep Tapes”

by Barbara

Ten years after the release of the critically acclaimed horror movie Creep, the franchise is set to make its debut on television with a spinoff series. The new show, The Creep Tapes, will premiere on November 15, 2024, on Shudder and AMC+. A first trailer has also been released, offering fans an early look at Mark Duplass reprising his role as the unsettling serial killer.

The Franchise’s Return

Following the success of Creep in 2014 and its sequel Creep 2 in 2017, the horror franchise is now returning with its first TV adaptation. The six-episode anthology series will explore the chilling encounters of different individuals who fall victim to Duplass’ character. Directed by Patrick Brice, who also helmed the original films, the series continues the eerie and unnerving tone of the franchise.

Critical Success of the Creep Films

Both Creep films received high praise from critics. The first movie, directed by Brice and co-starring Duplass, is a found-footage horror that follows a videographer (Brice) hired by a bizarre client (Duplass). The film quickly turns dark, earning a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes for its unsettling atmosphere and psychological tension.

Smile 2 Outshines Original Film In comparison, the 2017 sequel Creep 2 was even more well-received, holding a rare 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Duplass returned as the serial killer, with Brice once again directing. The film further solidified the franchise’s reputation for delivering unique and disturbing psychological horror.

The Transition to TV

Announced earlier this year, The Creep Tapes wrapped filming in June 2024. The series follows in the footsteps of its predecessors, with Brice returning as director and Duplass reprising his role. Each episode will highlight a different victim of Duplass’ chilling character, expanding on the disturbing world established in the films.

Reflecting on the series’ development, Duplass said, “A little over 10 years ago, Patrick Brice and I spent a week together in my cabin with a small digital camera. We emerged with a found footage horror film that was so wildly strange and uncomfortable we assumed no one would see it. To be continuing this unholy legacy in the series format is a true nightmare come true.”

AMC Networks’ Excitement for the Series

Courtney Thomasma, EVP of streaming at AMC Networks, expressed enthusiasm for the new series, stating, “Patrick and Mark have given us two of the most unique and exciting takes on psychological horror with Creep and Creep 2, both of which amassed a huge fan following. We’re thrilled to be working alongside them to expand this popular franchise with six thrilling episodes.”

Fans of the Creep series can look forward to the premiere of The Creep Tapes on November 15, 2024, on Shudder and AMC+. In the meantime, the original Creep and Creep 2 are available for streaming on Netflix.
