Kinematics has released the official trailer for its highly anticipated black-and-white dark comedy, Hippo. The film follows the tumultuous lives of two step-siblings as they navigate the challenges of adolescence while living in a repressive religious household.
Hippo is scheduled to premiere in select theaters on November 12, 2024. The film features a talented cast, including Kimball Farley (Ghost Hunt) as Hippo, Lilla Kizlinger (Explanation for Everuir) as Buttercup, Eliza Roberts (National Lampoon’s Animal House) as Ethel, Jesse Pimentel (In the Moment) as Darwin, and Vann Barrett as Dr. Lombardi. Notably, Eric Roberts (The Dark Knight) lends his voice as the narrator.
Directed by Mark H. Rapaport, who co-wrote the script with Farley, Hippo showcases the creative talents of executive producers David Gordon Green, Danny McBride, Jody Hill, Brandon James, Charmaine Kowalski, and Julian Lawitschka. Producers include Rapaport, Anthony Argento, and Siyu Lin.
The film’s synopsis offers insight into its themes: “The film examines the coming-of-age of two step-siblings: Hippo, a video-game-addicted teenager, and Buttercup, a Hungarian Catholic immigrant with a passion for classical music and a deep devotion to Jesus. Much like the Ancient Greek goddess Aphrodite, Buttercup experiences unrequited love from a brother who favors the chaos of war. This leads to a hormone-fueled, tragicomic waking nightmare that promises to be both engaging and thought-provoking.”
