“Shrinking” Season 2: A Journey from Grief to Forgiveness

by Barbara

There’s no shame in seeking therapy, but things can get interesting when your therapist might need just as much help as you. That’s the premise behind the hit series Shrinking, which returns for Season 2 on Apple TV+. Starring Harrison Ford and Jason Segel, the show once again puts mental health at the forefront—with a comedic twist.

In Season 1, Jason Segel’s character, Jimmy Laird, is a therapist grappling with personal grief while bending the rules by delivering blunt, unsweetened advice to his clients. The results were both heartfelt and hilarious.

As the second season begins, it shifts its focus from grief to forgiveness. Segel himself sheds light on the evolution of the show’s theme:

“The theme of Season 1 was grief, navigating through grief. The theme of Season 2, we zeroed in on to be forgiveness, and it’s, sort of, like once you’ve done the triage and gotten someone out of immediate danger of grief, gotten them through the hardest part of the process, what now?”

Despite tackling serious topics like mental health, the cast insists that humor continues to play a central role. Christa Miller, who stars alongside Segel, highlights the challenge of keeping a straight face during filming.

“It is very hard in a scene not to break,” Miller explains. “Jason never breaks, and the last scene I shot with him, I made him break, and I was so happy. He was like, ‘I haven’t broken the whole season. I’m so mad.’”

While laughter might be the best medicine, Segel believes that one of the key takeaways from Shrinking is the comfort in shared experiences.

“The most therapeutic thing, and I’ve certainly experienced it in my life, is just knowing that you’re not going through this thing alone,” Segel says. “Like, we have this terminal uniqueness of, ‘Nobody could understand what I’m going through,’ but really, like, I think the emotions that we all go through are pretty limited. People can understand what you’re going through.”

With humor, heart, and a deep dive into human emotions, Shrinking continues to resonate as it explores the messy, relatable path of healing. Season 2 promises a fresh perspective, reminding viewers that while grief may eventually fade, the journey of forgiveness is just beginning.
