Disney’s iconic Prince Charming, often portrayed as the gallant hero to various Disney princesses, is getting his own spotlight. The famous love interest is set to feature in a standalone film, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Paul King, known for his work on “Wonka” and the “Paddington” films.
King, alongside Simon Barnaby and Jon Croker, is co-writing the screenplay, though specific plot details have yet to be confirmed. It is also unclear whether the film will be live-action or animated. While Prince Charming is most often associated with Cinderella, this project will not be directly connected to her story.
Traditionally, the character of Prince Charming appears in classic fairy tales as the hero who rescues a damsel in distress, saving her from evil forces such as stepmothers. Famous examples include “Cinderella,” “Snow White,” and “Sleeping Beauty.” However, in these narratives, Prince Charming is typically a supporting figure, not the central character. This new film, however, will place him at the forefront.
Director Paul King has recently garnered success with “Wonka,” an origin story starring Timothée Chalamet as the legendary chocolatier. The film grossed an impressive $218 million in the U.S. and $634 million globally, marking a notable victory for Warner Bros. and theater chains. King’s previous credits include the beloved “Paddington” films from 2014 and 2017, which together earned $615 million worldwide. While King will not be directing the upcoming “Paddington in Peru,” he contributed to its story, continuing his association with the marmalade-loving bear.
With King’s track record of creating box-office hits, expectations are high for “Prince Charming,” as Disney looks to breathe new life into one of its classic characters.
