Well Go USA has unveiled the official trailer for “Beyond the Wasteland,” a dark thriller directed by Vardan Tozija, previously known simply as “M” during its festival debut. This North Macedonian film offers a fresh perspective on the post-apocalyptic genre, although it largely aligns with the familiar narrative of a zombie film.
Distinct from a documentary of the same name that focuses on fans of “Mad Max,” this feature delves into the horror of a world devastated by a lethal virus. The story follows a young boy who faces the prospect of losing everything while navigating a desolate landscape filled with the infected and the remnants of a humanity torn apart by conflict.
The indie film boasts a cast that includes Matej Sivakov, Sashko Kocev, Aleksandar Nicovski, Kamka Tocinovski, Bojana Gregoric Vejzovic, and Verica Nedeska. It received acclaim at the Sofia Film Festival, winning an award for its “remarkable work with child actors in the anti-utopian fairy tale.” This film reflects ongoing themes of hope amidst despair, a narrative still resonant in today’s world.
In the trailer, viewers are introduced to Marko, a boy living in isolation with his overprotective father, who strives to shield him from the “Evil Ones.” As Marko grapples with loneliness and an insatiable curiosity about the world beyond their secluded forest, he eventually ventures out, only to find himself confronted by unforeseen dangers and a reality that has been irrevocably altered.
Directed by Tozija, known for his previous work on “Amok” and several short films as well as the “Prespav” and “Radius” series, “Beyond the Wasteland” features a screenplay co-written by Darijan Pejovski and Tozija himself. The film initially premiered at the 2023 Cinedays Skopje Film Festival in North Macedonia.
Well Go USA is set to release “Beyond the Wasteland” directly to VOD on November 5, 2024.
