‘Thunderbolts’ First Trailer: Anti-Heroes Team Up Amidst Chaos

by Barbara Miller

Marvel’s new film “Thunderbolts” has released its first trailer. The second-generation Black Widow, Bucky, Red Guardian, Ghost, U.S. Agent, and other most captivating anti-hero characters have formed a team. Kindness shows on everyone’s face, but there’s a warning: “Beware of these good people you’ve assembled.”

The film stars Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Hannah John-Kamen, Olga Kurylenko, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Harrison Ford, Geraldine Viswanathan, and Lewis Pullman. This team is similar to DC’s “Suicide Squad,” telling the story of a group of characters who once served as villains now teaming up to carry out tasks for the government.

Directed by Jake Schreier (known for “Shameless,” “Minx,” and “Kidding”) and written by Eric Pearson (who worked on “Black Widow” and “Thor: Ragnarok”), the movie is set to be released in North America on May 2 next year.

The Thunderbolts is a fictional anti-hero organization in Marvel comics, co-created by Kurt Busiek and Mark Bagley. The Thunderbolts made their first appearance in “Incredible Hulk” Vol. 2 #449 in January 1997.

The Thunderbolts were first presented to readers and the Marvel universe as a group of superheroes who became guardians to help protect the world after the Avengers were declared dead following the “Onslaught” crossover event in 1996. However, on the last page of the first issue of the comic, it is revealed that the Thunderbolts are actually the disguised Masters of Evil, a surprising twist carefully kept secret by Marvel.

In subsequent storylines, the organization vetoes their leader, Baron Zemo, and tries to become heroes on their own. Eventually, they succeed under the leadership of Avenger Hawkeye. The themes of redemption and the essence of heroism often appear in the “Thunderbolts” comics. This series has also received praise for using minor characters from other Marvel comics and for its continuity-themed storytelling.
