In the horror/thriller new release “Don’t Speak,” James McAvoy faces a significant challenge in portraying a character who is as complex as he is unpredictable. The film delves into a world of unease and mystery, with McAvoy’s performance at the center of it all.
He offers an in-depth analysis of his role as Paddy to “Entertainment Weekly.” Paddy is described as a “hyper-masculine man” with a multifaceted personality. “He presents a seemingly idyllic and isolated lifestyle. Paddy is a man who has returned to nature, capable of self-sustaining survival. He is down-to-earth, educated, erudite, and exudes a certain sex appeal. His desires are simple – to love, to feel, to touch, to bite, to talk, and to argue. This is a modern take on classical masculinity, far from the ‘metrosexual’ or the ‘beta male.’ He is uncompromising in every aspect, yet he manages to make this unyielding nature almost palatable,” McAvoy explains.
Scott McNairy plays another lead role as Ben, a quintessential beta male. McAvoy remarks, “I find it fascinating how Scott’s character is so easily drawn to such an uncompromising, retro alpha male. Their dynamic adds another layer of complexity to the story.”
McAvoy further elaborates on the significance of his character in the context of the real world. “There are indeed many men in reality who are attracted to such figures. The dogmas they uphold are cause for concern. This character mirrors many real-life individuals who have captured the attention of young men, and not just them. Currently, there are numerous young men who are drawn to this tough, yet disconcerting and worrying doctrine.”
He likens Paddy to the controversial internet celebrity Andrew Tate, but also clarifies that he is not an exact replica. “In the film, Paddy hides his toxic masculinity beneath a charming and amiable exterior. However, as the story progresses, the line between his façade and his true nature becomes increasingly blurred.”
The movie unfolds a tale where “a terrifying something can be seen and heard but cannot be spoken of.” Mackenzie Davis, Scott McNairy, and Aisling Franciosi also star in this gripping thriller. Directed and written by James Watkins and produced by Blumhouse, “Don’t Speak” is a remake of a Danish film. It tells the story of an American family on vacation who meets an alluring British family. The latter invites the former to spend a weekend at their beautiful estate, only for the dream vacation to turn into a nightmare. This film promises to keep audiences on the edge of their seats with its blend of horror, suspense, and complex character studies.
