The long-awaited sixth and final season of “The Handmaid’s Tale” has finally commenced filming. Hulu shared on-set photos featuring the return of lead actress Elizabeth Moss. It was announced that shooting for this season began on September 3 and it will air in spring 2025.
The series was renewed for a sixth season in 2022, with plans to start filming in 2023 and air in 2024. However, the schedule was delayed due to the Hollywood strike.
The cast includes Elizabeth Moss, Yvonne Strahovski, Ann Dowd, Joseph Fiennes, Bradley Whitford, Max Minghella, O-T Fagbenle, Samira Wiley, Madeline Brewer, Amanda Brugel, and Sam Jaeger.
The final episode of the fourth season brought a long-awaited cathartic moment as June orchestrated the murder of her former abuser, Commander Fred Waterford. With the help of other refugee handmaids, she placed him on the wall. The dystopian drama ended with two consecutive images: June with blood on her face, holding her baby daughter; and Fred’s headless body hanging above the familiar slogan “Nolite te bastardes carborundorum.”
The ending left June’s fate hanging in the balance. The official synopsis for season 5 read: “June faces the consequences of killing Commander Waterford while struggling to redefine her identity and purpose. As Gilead’s influence spreads to Canada, widowed Serena attempts to raise her profile in Toronto. Commander Lawrence works with Aunt Lydia to try to reform Gilead and rise to power. June, Luke, and Moira fight Gilead from a distance while continuing their mission to save Hannah and be reunited with her.”
“The Handmaid’s Tale” is produced by MGM Television and is responsible for international distribution. The executive producers include Bruce Miller, Warren Littlefield, Elizabeth Moss, Daniel Wilson, Fran Sears, Eric Tuchman, Yerin Ha, Rachel Skukert, Sheila Hockin, John Weber, Frank Siracusa, Steve Stark, and Kim Todd.
