Lucasfilm has officially entered into a deal with Simon Kinberg to develop a new trilogy of Star Wars films. Kinberg will take on writing duties and produce the series alongside Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.
Sources indicate that the trilogy is expected to be set outside the established Skywalker Saga that began with George Lucas’s original 1977 film. While initial rumors suggested that Kinberg would continue the Skywalker Saga with Episodes 10-12, insiders have since clarified that the new trilogy will initiate a fresh storyline. This new series will coexist with other Star Wars projects currently in development, including films from directors James Mangold, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Taika Waititi, and Donald Glover. As is typical, neither Lucasfilm nor Disney has commented on these details.
Kinberg, a seasoned collaborator with Lucasfilm, previously co-created the acclaimed Star Wars Rebels animated series, which ran for four seasons from 2014 to 2018. He also served as a consultant for Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), the film that successfully revived the franchise.
In addition to his work with Star Wars, Kinberg has built a prolific career in other major franchises. He spent over a decade contributing to the X-Men films and wrote the critically praised Logan (2017), directed by Mangold. Kinberg also produced the first two Deadpool films and serves as an executive producer on the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine film. His credits extend to producing Ridley Scott’s The Martian and co-writing the Sherlock Holmes films starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law. Additionally, Kinberg produced the Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile films, part of Kenneth Branagh’s Agatha Christie series.
Looking ahead, Kinberg is involved in several high-profile projects, including producing Paramount’s remake of Stephen King’s The Running Man, which is currently in production. Directed by Edgar Wright, the film stars Glen Powell, Josh Brolin, Emilia Jones, and others. Kinberg is also attached to produce a Star Trek film for Paramount, directed by Toby Haynes and written by Seth Grahame-Smith.
Kinberg is represented by CAA and Karl Austen at Jackoway Austen Tyerman.
