Eight years after the events of the highly successful 2016 animated feature Zootopia, fans were treated to an exciting glimpse of what’s to come in Zootopia 2 at D23 Brazil. The original movie introduced audiences to the determined and wide-eyed rabbit Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) who left her hometown to join the Zootopia Police Department. Along the way, she crossed paths with the charming con artist Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman), and together they uncovered a conspiracy that threatened the delicate balance of the city. Now, Nick and Judy are set to return for another thrilling adventure.
The Disney Animation Twitter account shared updates from the company’s panel at D23 Brasil, which showcased projects from Pixar, Walt Disney Animation, and Disney Live-Action. As Zootopia 2 writer and director and Walt Disney Animation chief creative officer Jared Bush took the stage, a new image promoting the movie was revealed. This first look gave audiences a much-anticipated glimpse at the returning leads. Judy and Nick are seen out of their police uniforms and dressed in a more casual look. The background of the image features a new view of the city, including Savanna Central and the City Hall building. This not only showcases the familiar locations that fans loved in the first movie but also hints at the expansion of the world of Zootopia.
The new image, though only a brief peek, along with previously revealed details, offers some insight into the current status of Judy and Nick. Despite the original movie concluding with them becoming cops and embarking on a new case, a clip revealed during D23 in August indicated that the pair had handed in their badges and become private investigators. This decision adds a new layer of intrigue to their story. The casually dressed yet functional clothing of Nick and Judy in the new image, especially Nick’s ensemble, evokes the look of other pop-culture detectives like Tom Selleck’s Thomas Magnum from Magnum P.I. Moreover, while the August clip introduced viewers to the sequel’s Marsh Market, a new area featuring amphibious and semiaquatic animals, the new image also reveals that past locations within the city of Zootopia will be revisited.
As of now, even though eight years have passed since the release of the original movie, little is still known about the events of Zootopia 2. The D23 clip released in August only provided a partial view of their latest case by showing a chase through the Marsh Market. There is still much mystery surrounding why the duo is pursuing Gary the snake (Ke Huy Quan) and what the larger mystery might be. With the original movie having a memorable plot twist, many viewers will be eagerly looking for any clues about what Judy and Nick are investigating as marketing for the sequel ramps up. It’s understandable why early promotion for Zootopia 2 has been cautious in revealing too many details. However, fans are eager to see how Judy and Nick will embark on their adventures and strike out on their own away from the Zootopia Police Department.
