The highly anticipated final trailer for “Mufasa: The Lion King” has arrived, captivating audiences with its glimpses of familiar faces and enticing storylines. This upcoming prequel to the 2019 photorealistic CG-animated remake of “The Lion King” holds great promise. The 2019 film was an enormous success, earning a staggering $1.662 billion at the worldwide box office and remaining the tenth highest-grossing movie of all time. “Mufasa” is set to take viewers on a journey back in time, following the younger version of the late king Mufasa, portrayed by Aaron Pierre, and the early days of his contentious friendship with Taka, who later becomes Scar, played by Kelvin Harrison Jr.
Disney’s unveiling of the final trailer is a momentous event. The video begins with a comical meta moment as Timon, voiced by Billy Eichner, and Pumbaa, voiced by Seth Rogen, express excitement about the new trailer. Then, an older Rafiki, played by John Kani, takes on the role of storyteller, sharing Mufasa’s origin story. As the flashback commences, the young Mufasa is seen embarking on an adventure with Taka. Along the way, he encounters several important characters who will play significant roles in his journey. Among them are Simba’s future mother, Sarabi, portrayed by Tiffany Boone, a young Rafiki, played by Kagiso Lediga, and Mufasa’s future right-hand bird, Zazu, voiced by Preston Nyman.
The presence of these characters in the trailer holds great significance. While it was already known that young Zazu and Rafiki would have a role to play in “Mufasa: The Lion King,” this trailer highlights just how integral they will be to the main storyline of the prequel. Zazu, in particular, seems to be a major part of the adventure as Sarabi’s scout. Additionally, he is likely to occupy the same comical relief position that he did in the original movie. In the 2019 “The Lion King,” the older Zazu was voiced by John Oliver, who is not currently set to reprise the role in this prequel.
The trailer also delves deeper into the character of young Rafiki. While he still holds the ethereal spiritual power of his older self, he showcases a much wackier side that he appears to have outgrown in the years that pass. It seems that he may not yet be fully in control of himself, as he is described as a “hallucinating baboon” and is shown to be easily distracted.
From a viewer’s perspective, the new “Mufasa: The Lion King” trailer is a tantalizing indication of what’s to come. The movie appears to be working hard to include as many iconic characters from the original as possible by featuring both timelines.
