by Barbara Miller

Megalopolis’ digital release date is out following its lackluster theater run.

What it means for the film’s future reception is uncertain.

Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, Megalopolis hit theaters in September. The sci-fi film about architect Cesar Catilina’s attempt to rebuild New York into a utopia got mixed reviews and was a box office bomb. Starring Adam Driver, Shia LaBeouf, and others, it grossed only $13.7 million worldwide on a $120 million budget.

Lionsgate has now revealed that Megalopolis will be available on premium video on demand starting November 12. It can be purchased or rented for 48 hours on major VOD platforms.

Despite the VOD release, it’s doubtful the film will turn its fortunes around. Its Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score is 46% and audience score is 35%, suggesting little positive word-of-mouth. While the cast and Coppola’s bold choices might draw some home viewers, it lacks commercial appeal to recoup theatrical losses soon.

However, Megalopolis’ idiosyncrasies could make it a cult classic in the long run. Its VOD availability will increase viewership, but streaming release will be key. For now, it remains a divisive and unsuccessful film by a Hollywood legend.
