There’s exciting news for Star Wars fans as it’s been reported that Daisy Ridley’s Rey Skywalker is in line to appear in more than just the “New Jedi Order” film by director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. After word got out that Lucasfilm was in discussions with Simon Kinberg regarding writing and producing a brand-new trilogy of Star Wars films, it seems Rey Skywalker is now seen as a crucial cinematic asset for upcoming projects. There’s a good chance she’ll play a significant role in this potential new trilogy.
It Reported that Daisy Ridley’s Rey is “key to the franchise’s next turn.” While it’s not clear exactly which movies she’s being considered for beyond the already announced “New Jedi Order” movie (officially announced by Lucasfilm in April 2023 at Star Wars Celebration), it’s reasonable to assume the new trilogy in development would be a likely place for her to continue her story from 2019’s “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”.
What does Rey mean for the future of Star Wars? An insider who described her as “the most valuable cinematic asset, in some ways maybe the only one, Star Wars has right now.” Since Lucasfilm hasn’t had a theatrical release since 2019’s “Rise of Skywalker”, this makes sense. Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin and Grogu are getting their chance to become “cinematic assets” with 2026’s “The Mandalorian & Grogu”. But currently, it’s really Ridley’s Rey Skywalker who has a proven track record.
All in all, this new report indicates that Rey has a big Star Wars future ahead. She might take on an “Obi-Wan Kenobi” type role, guiding a new generation of characters in the galaxy far, far away. However, it does raise questions about the “New Jedi Order” movie. Will it be cancelled with its ideas perhaps incorporated into Kinberg’s trilogy (if it is indeed Episodes 10 – 12, which hasn’t been confirmed)? Regardless, Star Wars fans can expect to see a lot more of Rey Skywalker in the franchise’s future.
Our take on Rey’s future is that there are definitely more stories to be told about her. Beyond the events of the sequel trilogy, there are numerous possibilities. She could be involved in rebuilding a new version of the New Jedi Order, hopefully achieving what Luke Skywalker couldn’t. Also, the chance to give Rey a stronger and more redeeming story after the controversial “Rise of Skywalker” is an exciting prospect for the Star Wars franchise’s future.
