A movie that reunites key cast and crew from the iconic Forrest Gump has managed to pass a box office milestone, yet it continues to face an uphill battle to break even.
Back in 1994, Robert Zemeckis’ Forrest Gump was a huge success. Adapted from Winston Groom’s novel, it told the story of a man who, without realizing it, witnessed and had an impact on numerous significant historical events throughout his life. With a budget of $55 million, it grossed an impressive $678.2 million worldwide, ranking as the second highest-grossing movie globally that year, trailing only Disney’s The Lion King.
Not only was Forrest Gump a box office hit, but it also triumphed critically. On Rotten Tomatoes, it boasted a Certified Fresh 75% critics’ score along with an almost perfect 95% audience score. Moreover, it received 13 Academy Award nominations and took home six Oscars, including Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actor (Tom Hanks), Best Director, and Best Picture, outshining contenders like Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction and Frank Darabont’s The Shawshank Redemption.
Now, the new movie Here has reached a box office milestone. Directed by Zemeckis, with a screenplay by Eric Roth and featuring co-stars Robin Wright and Tom Hanks from Forrest Gump, along with a cast that includes Paul Bettany, Kelly Reilly, and Michelle Dockery, Here takes a different approach. It uses a static camera shot to unfold a nonlinear story centered around centuries of drama on a single plot of land and within the home built there.
During its opening weekend, Here debuted at No. 5 in the domestic box office with a meager $4.8 million. As of now, it has grossed $10.2 million worldwide, comprising a $9.8 million domestic gross and $368,000 from international releases. This has finally pushed it past the $10 million mark after nearly two weeks in theaters. However, with an estimated production budget between $45 and $50 million, it’s clear that the movie is still deep in the red and shows no signs of turning a profit by the end of its theatrical run.
What does this mean for Here? It’s likely to be a box office bomb. Its performance at the box office, perhaps hampered by its dismal 35% Rotten Tomatoes score, suggests it will never make a profit in theaters. Generally, movies need to earn around two and a half times their budgets to break even, which would place Here’s break-even point at approximately $115 million. Given the upcoming releases of major blockbusters like Red One, Wicked, Gladiator II, and Moana 2 that will fill up theaters, it seems highly improbable for Here to reach that break-even goal.
