The One Chicago franchise is set to stage its first three-way crossover in five years. The last such event involving Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D., and Chicago Med took place over five years ago, in October 2019, before the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic. The pandemic restrictions and shorter seasons in recent years have posed challenges in making crossovers happen. The previous crossover event, titled “Infection,” centered around a bacteria outbreak.
Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D., and Chicago Med will have a crossover event later this season. The plot is said to focus on a massive explosion in an office building, which will wreak havoc both above and below ground across the entire city of Chicago. As of now, there’s no set air date for this crossover that will pit Chicago’s finest firefighters, police officers, doctors, and nurses against the chaos as they strive to save as many lives as possible.
What does this mean for One Chicago? The TV universe is reclaiming one of its greatest strengths. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, crossovers within the One Chicago universe were more frequent and always served as a satisfying culmination of the various Dick Wolf-produced procedural series. Once again, the network television universe will fulfill the potential of its shared universe as characters from Chicago Fire interact with those from Chicago P.D. and Chicago Med. This is especially thrilling for the new cast members who have joined each respective series since 2019 and haven’t had the opportunity to cross paths yet.
The upcoming crossover also gives viewers more incentive to watch all three series in the coming months. While the crossover will be accessible to all viewers, having a good understanding of the current storylines and characters from Chicago P.D., Chicago Fire, and Chicago Med will make the experience even more enjoyable. This was an advantage of past crossovers and will be a strength reignited in the upcoming explosive storyline.
Our take on the One One Chicago crossover is that it will hopefully be less prophetic than its predecessor. One Chicago’s forthcoming crossover is an exciting development for the franchise that will benefit all three shows immensely. The previous crossover’s focus on a deadly bacterium outbreak in the city turned out to be eerily prescient, given that the Covid-19 pandemic began just months later. The new One Chicago crossover should be just as thrilling and high-stakes as past ones, without the unnerving prescience.
