“Y2K” Trailer: Rachel Zegler Hunted by Appliances

by Barbara Miller

The trailer and character posters of the horror-science fiction-comedy “Y2K” have been released. The shrill buzzing sound of dial-up internet is a prominent feature of “Y2K”, the directorial debut of Kyle Mooney. “Either party like it’s 1999, or die like it’s 2000.”

On the midnight of the transition from 1999 to 2000, high school students Eli (played by Jaeden Martell), his friend Danny (played by Julian Dennison), and the always dreamy Laura (played by Rachel Zegler) decided to attend a grand party before the new millennium. However, when the clock struck midnight, unimaginable crazy events took place. Due to the Y2K virus, household electronic products came to life and turned into killing machines, including video recorders that threw out videotapes and microwaves that searched for human heads to cook.

In the trailer, there is also a spoof of a speech made by former US President William Jefferson Clinton in 1999 regarding the “Y2K bug” issue. At that time, he was trying to ease the concerns of the American people about the calendar data format as the world entered the new millennium.
