Ridley Scott discloses how Steven Spielberg played a part in ditching the initial Gladiator II script by Nick Cave. After Gladiator’s 2000 success, the 2024 sequel took a different path.
Scott says Spielberg, along with his own doubts, led to scrapping Cave’s script that involved resurrecting Maximus in a wild scenario.
This was for the best as Cave’s script would’ve radically changed the genre and likely received worse reviews. Instead, Gladiator II has positive reviews, especially for Denzel Washington’s performance.
Spielberg helped save Gladiator II from a potentially misaligned sequel. 2024’s version is a more fitting continuation than what Cave’s script would’ve offered.
