‘Landman’ Co-Creator Teases Future Seasons as Series Gains Traction

by Barbara Miller

The drama series Landman, based on the Boomtown podcast, made its highly anticipated debut on Paramount+ on November 17, offering a gritty exploration of the oil and gas industry in West Texas. Co-created by Christian Wallace and Yellowstone mastermind Taylor Sheridan, the series stars Billy Bob Thornton, known for his iconic roles in Sling Blade, Armageddon, and Fargo season 1. Joining Thornton is a star-studded cast including John Hamm, Ali Larter, James Jordan, Jacob Lofland, Michelle Randolph, and Demi Moore.

In a recent interview, Wallace provided an optimistic update on the show’s future, expressing a desire to continue exploring the complex stories of the oil-rich Texas landscape. He emphasized that while the first season covers substantial ground, it only scratches the surface of the many narratives tied to the oil industry. “As long as there are stories to tell, I would love to keep telling them,” Wallace shared. “We really just skinned the surface in our first season, and that’s saying something because we cover a lot of ground. So yeah, I hope we keep telling these stories for a while.”

Could Landman Achieve Yellowstone-Level Success?

Landman has the potential to replicate the massive success of Yellowstone, which skyrocketed in popularity thanks to Sheridan’s knack for weaving gripping narratives about land conflicts and family drama. With the same platform backing both series, Landman could attract Yellowstone’s built-in audience if it maintains a compelling focus, strong character development, and captivating storylines. Early praise and a solid Rotten Tomatoes score suggest the show could enjoy a long run, especially if it taps into the neo-Western appeal that Yellowstone made mainstream.

Star Power Adds Appeal

In addition to Sheridan’s reputation, Landman boasts a powerhouse cast that includes Thornton as Tommy Norris, Hamm as Monty Miller, and Moore as Cami Miller. With their performances already drawing attention, the show promises an engaging dynamic among the trio. Thornton, an Academy Award nominee, joins Hamm, also known for his celebrated role in Fargo, and Moore, whose career highlights include Ghost and A Few Good Men, alongside recent acclaim for The Substance. These well-established stars, coupled with intriguing characters, position Landman as a series to watch.

The Future of Landman: A Likely Path to Season 2

With the future of Yellowstone uncertain and the series nearing its conclusion, Landman could fill the void left by its predecessor and potentially become another hit for Paramount+. Viewership and audience reception will undoubtedly influence the show’s future, but with Wallace’s enthusiasm for the series and Sheridan’s proven track record, Landman season 2 seems more than likely. As the first season unfolds, fans are eager to see how the show delves deeper into the high-stakes world of the Texas oil industry and the complex characters it produces.
