Denzel Washington has announced that two additional installments in The Equalizer franchise, The Equalizer 4 and The Equalizer 5, are currently in the works. Washington first portrayed the former government assassin Robert McCall in 2014, with sequels following in 2018 and 2023.
What Washington’s Announcement Means for the Franchise
Although The Equalizer 3 appeared to wrap up McCall’s journey, director Antoine Fuqua had previously hinted at the possibility of continuing the series if Washington was on board. Given Washington’s confirmation, it seems likely that Fuqua will return to direct the new films.
The Equalizer series has enjoyed both critical and commercial success, which bodes well for the upcoming sequels. However, with Washington approaching 70, it’s possible that The Equalizer 4 could feature a more seasoned McCall, potentially adding a new layer to the character’s dynamic.
Looking Ahead to The Equalizer 4 and The Equalizer 5
As the franchise moves forward, the question of McCall’s physicality in action scenes arises. While Washington’s charisma continues to drive the films, his age could limit some of the more intense action sequences. However, McCall’s strategic mind and ability to outsmart adversaries will likely remain central to the character’s appeal.
Though The Equalizer 3 provided a satisfying conclusion, it appears that McCall’s story isn’t over yet, and fans can expect more action-packed films in the franchise.
