HBO’s Comedy Shift: ‘It’s Florida Man’ Renewed for Season 2

by Barbara Miller

HBO’s evolving comedy landscape is moving toward smaller, character-driven stories that strike a chord with viewers. The rebranded Max (formerly HBO Max) has long been known for innovative content, from acclaimed dramas to quirky comedies like Los Espookys and How To with John Wilson. This commitment to blending sharp humor with unique storytelling has led to a growing collection of fan-favorite shows.

One such show, a low-budget anthology comedy, has recently gained attention, scoring an impressive 86% on Rotten Tomatoes. As HBO fine-tunes its comedy budget, the success of this show signals a potential wave of cost-effective, late-night hits. In an investor call last year, HBO and Max Content head Casey Bloys noted that dramas typically offer higher returns than comedies. However, Bloys is now focusing on revitalizing the genre by pairing high-profile, star-studded shows with more affordable, offbeat options amid industry-wide budget cuts.

Created by Mark Herwick and Jeff Tomsic, the show takes a comedic look at the outlandish stories from Florida, featuring interviews with locals and humorous reenactments with a rotating cast of well-known actors and comedians. The series has earned praise for its clever writing and engaging performances, quickly becoming a surprise hit.

Despite limited promotion and the disruption caused by Hurricane Milton, the show attracted 2.3 million cross-platform viewers on average, ranking among the top three most-watched series on Max since its October debut. Season 1, which consisted of six 20-minute episodes, featured over two dozen guest stars, including Anna Faris, Randall Park, and Jake Johnson. The season finale aired on November 22, with production for the next season still uncertain.

What This Means for Max’s Comedy Strategy

The renewal of It’s Florida Man reflects HBO’s shift in its approach to comedy, proving that high-quality entertainment doesn’t always need a massive budget. The show’s success demonstrates that viewers crave relatable, authentic humor—qualities that are central to its charm. As HBO continues refining its identity post-rebranding, It’s Florida Man could serve as a model for future comedies centered on character-driven plots and sharp writing.

With its success, the show underscores that low-budget series can resonate with audiences, thrive in a competitive streaming market, and carve out their own niche. By celebrating Florida’s eccentricities, It’s Florida Man illustrates how creativity and innovation can flourish even in a crowded space.
