In the world of cinema, winning the Academy Award for Best Picture is a remarkable feat. A movie that achieved this honor and also grossed over $378 million at the box office has now received an unexpected sequel update 16 years after its initial release.
The Oscar for Best Picture has been a prestigious annual award since 1929, with many box office successes like Titanic, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, and Oppenheimer among its recipients. However, sequels for Best Picture winners are rare due to factors such as standalone narratives and artistic integrity. Examples like The Godfather and Rocky with their multiple sequels are exceptions.
“Slumdog Millionaire” is the movie in question here. Co-directed by Danny Boyle and Loveleen Tandan, with a script by Simon Beaufoy based on a novel, it told the story of Jamal Malik, a Mumbai slum teenager who competed on the Hindi version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” and recounted his life during an interrogation. Dev Patel made his debut in this hit 2008 film.
Now, 16 years on, there’s a significant development. Bridge7, a newly launched production banner, has acquired the film sequel and TV rights to “Slumdog Millionaire” from Celador Films, which produced the original. The new team plans to work with Celador on a potential sequel. While it’s not a certainty that a sequel will actually happen, this acquisition shows they’re serious about continuing the story, perhaps in film or TV form. It’s also unclear if the original cast, including Dev Patel, will return, but it’s expected to focus on the next chapter of Jamal’s journey. This unexpected update has piqued the interest of fans who are now eagerly waiting to see if “Slumdog Millionaire” will indeed have a new chapter on the big or small screen
