The Fast & Furious franchise, renowned for its adrenaline-pumping action, is facing uncertainty regarding the future of its planned spinoff focused on Luke Hobbs. Despite the continued success of the series, which has evolved from street racing tales to global heists and espionage, the standalone film centered on Hobbs, portrayed by Dwayne Johnson, remains in limbo.
Hobbs first appeared in Fast Five as a DSS agent, becoming a key figure in the franchise. His dynamic partnership with Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw in the 2019 spinoff Hobbs & Shaw was a hit, blending action with comedic chemistry. However, discussions around a new Hobbs-centric spinoff have stalled, with the film’s connection to the upcoming Fast & Furious 11 also unclear.
Chris Morgan, the writer behind Hobbs & Shaw, addressed the uncertainty in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter. He revealed that although plans for a Hobbs spinoff were announced in 2023, details about its production timeline and potential links to Fast 11 are still up in the air. “That’s really something [Universal Pictures] would have to speak to. We’re talking about what comes when and how, but I’ll leave that to greater minds than mine,” Morgan stated.
Morgan’s comments reflect the ongoing challenge of managing spinoff projects within the larger Fast & Furious universe. While fans have embraced Hobbs since his debut and are eager for more, the complex web of interconnected storylines—particularly with new villain Dante Reyes introduced in Fast X—makes it unlikely that a Hobbs-led film will be released before Fast 11.
Despite the uncertainty, Morgan’s recent collaboration with Johnson on Amazon MGM’s Red One suggests their partnership is still strong, offering hope for future high-octane stories, whether within or outside the Fast & Furious franchise.
As for the future of Hobbs & Shaw 2, the lack of clear plans signals that Universal may be carefully considering how to best position the character in the lead-up to the final chapters of the Fast & Furious saga. Fans can expect the signature action and humor that have defined the franchise, but balancing the spinoff with the main storyline will likely require a measured approach.
