A24’s horror film Heretic, starring Hugh Grant, has made a significant mark at the box office, securing a spot in the top 50 domestic films of 2024. The movie, which follows two Mormon missionary girls trapped in a remote house by Grant’s character, has earned $24.7 million domestically, ranking 49th on the Box Office Mojo list. This places it ahead of A24’s We Live in Time and outperforms Blink Twice and The Bikeriders.
A Strong Contender for A24
Heretic has surpassed its break-even point with a worldwide total of $31.9 million, well beyond its estimated $10 million production budget. This achievement underscores the film’s success, positioning it as one of A24’s standout releases for 2024. The movie joins Civil War and We Live in Time as the third A24 film to crack the top 50 this year.
A Noteworthy Victory Amidst Fierce Competition
Despite challenges from films like Smile 2 and Terrifier 3, and the seasonal slowdown in box office activity, Heretic has thrived. Its success is even more impressive given its dialogue-heavy, esoteric nature. A24’s growing dominance is evident as Civil War outperformed larger releases such as Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Madame Web. Heretic’s top 50 placement marks a major milestone for the independent distributor.
