Sean Patrick Thomas is returning to the “Cruel Intentions” franchise, reprising his role in the newly rebooted series. Thomas originally starred in the 1999 film as Ronald, a music teacher entangled in the manipulative schemes of high school students. This time, however, he portrays Hank Chadwick, a college history professor navigating a more complex relationship.
In the reboot, Hank enters a relationship with his teaching assistant, CeCe (Sara Silva). Thomas discussed the dynamics of their relationship, emphasizing its healthier and more balanced nature compared to other characters in the franchise. Despite the age gap and power imbalance, Thomas believes Hank and CeCe’s bond is rooted in mutual respect and genuine connection. “There’s a right way and a wrong way to do things. I like to see people try and do things the right way,” Thomas explained. “This is a relationship that contrasts all the others — it’s genuine and pure, and they want to do it the right way.”
A Healthier Dynamic: Hank and CeCe vs. Ronald and Cecile
Hank’s relationship with CeCe marks a stark contrast to the dynamic between Ronald and Cecile (Selma Blair) in the original film. While Ronald and Cecile shared a student-tutor relationship lacking professionalism, Hank and CeCe develop their bond with greater mutual respect. While there’s still room for potential scandal, their connection is less fraught with the same risks as their predecessors.
Their romance develops more gradually, with Hank initially impressed by CeCe’s work ethic and academic skills. This professional admiration allows for a more equal, balanced dynamic, giving Thomas the opportunity to explore a different but familiar role.
Challenges Ahead for Hank and CeCe
Though their relationship begins on a positive note, it won’t be without complications. As the series unfolds, Hank’s conduct as a professor may come under scrutiny, raising questions about his professional ethics. This could have significant ramifications for his role in the series, particularly in future seasons.
Despite these looming challenges, Thomas’s portrayal of Hank’s relationship with CeCe suggests their bond will remain a central and positive force in the story. In a series often focused on darker themes of manipulation and power, Hank and CeCe may emerge as a relationship viewers can cheer for, offering a rare glimpse of sincerity amid the intrigue.
