Following the success of Alien: Romulus at the box office, director Fede Alvarez is treading carefully when considering a sequel. Released on August 16, 2024, the film grossed $350 million worldwide, including $40 million from IMAX screens, and earned favorable reviews with an 80% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, Alvarez is taking a cautious approach to continuing the story.
Director’s Cautious Approach to Sequels
While a sequel to Alien: Romulus seems likely, Alvarez and co-writer Rodo Sayagues are in no rush to jump into production. The director emphasized the importance of finding the right story before moving forward. “We definitely want to do it. The studio wants to do it. I want to do it. But with sequels, it’s always about finding the right story,” Alvarez said. “It’s not until we find something that feels like it’s worth making that we’ll go ahead with it. You never want to make a sequel just because the first one is a hit. That’s a recipe for disaster.”
Potential Sequel in the Works
Despite Alvarez’s cautious stance, 20th Century Studios appears confident about continuing the Alien franchise. Steve Asbell, head of the studio, recently expressed interest in bringing back the surviving characters, Rain and Andy, played by Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson. Though a deal has not been finalized with Alvarez, the studio is keen on continuing their story.
Alvarez and Sayagues are reportedly brainstorming multiple ideas for a follow-up, and with Disney, the parent company of 20th Century Studios, also looking to expand the franchise with the upcoming TV series Alien: Earth, there is growing anticipation for more Alien content. However, Alvarez is adamant that any sequel must be driven by a compelling narrative, or he may pass the directing reins to someone else—potentially Ridley Scott.
A Sequel Worth Waiting For?
Alien: Romulus successfully reintroduced the iconic franchise, balancing nostalgia with fresh characters like Rain and Andy. While many new faces didn’t make it through the film, the survivors left the door open for future adventures. As Alvarez takes his time crafting a worthy follow-up, fans are left eagerly awaiting what could come next for the franchise, trusting that his meticulous approach will lead to a story that lives up to Alien’s legacy.
