Taxi Driver screenwriter Paul Schrader reveals that a planned Frank Sinatra biopic he was considering was abandoned because he insisted on casting a particular “canceled” actor. The idea of a Sinatra biopic has been around for years, with Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio also attempting to bring the singer’s story to the screen, though their project has stalled.
Schrader’s Plan and the Obstacle
Schrader, a famed collaborator of Scorsese, had his own vision for a Sinatra biopic. He thought the script was perfect for Kevin Spacey, who, however, is ostracized from Hollywood due to sexual misconduct allegations that emerged in 2017. Schrader approached financiers with the idea of casting Spacey but was flatly refused, as Spacey, despite being acquitted in court, remains “canceled” in the eyes of the industry.
What This Means for Spacey and Schrader
Spacey’s Allegations and Consequences
Since 2017, Spacey has faced multiple sexual misconduct allegations. Actor Anthony Rapp accused him of making advances when Rapp was 15, and there were further accusations on the set of House of Cards. While he hasn’t been convicted in court, he has suffered career setbacks, losing his role on House of Cards and being replaced in Ridley Scott’s All the Money in the World.
Schrader’s Controversial Stance
Schrader is known for his outspoken and sometimes controversial views. His insistence on casting Spacey for the Sinatra biopic, despite the actor’s tainted reputation, showcases his uncompromising nature. There are other actors who could potentially play Sinatra well, but Schrader won’t consider anyone else.
The State of Sinatra Biopic Projects
While Schrader seems out of the running to make a Sinatra film, Scorsese and DiCaprio’s attempt still faces difficulties. Biopics about famous singers are popular, but getting a Sinatra biopic off the ground remains a near-impossible task.
