Ten years after the latest sequel of a Jim Carrey franchise hit the screens, there’s an unexpected update. Carrey, an Emmy-nominee famed for comedies like Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and The Mask, has had a wide-ranging career with both comedies and dramas. His films have collectively grossed nearly $6 billion globally. While he’s now part of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, he’s rarely made sequels, with 1995’s Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls being a notable exception. In 2014, he was involved in a franchise that might see further expansion.
The 1994 film Dumb and Dumber, directed by Peter Farrelly with a co-written screenplay, launched a franchise. Starring Carrey and Jeff Bridges as low-IQ friends, it had a TV adaptation and prequel. The two reprised their roles in the 2014 sequel. The Farrelly brothers, promoting a new Jack Black comedy, said they won’t rule out a new Dumb and Dumber movie, perhaps for its 40th anniversary in 2034. Carrey even proposed naming it “Gum and Gummier”. However, a new movie isn’t a certainty, especially with Carrey and Daniels’ involvement. But Peter Farrelly’s Oscar wins could potentially aid in financing if it were to happen.
