Ted McGinley, who plays Derek on “Shrinking,” addresses the storyline where Liz kisses Mac. Derek and Liz are a key couple on the Apple TV+ series. Despite their strong relationship, season 2 has Liz feeling neglected by Derek, leading to the kiss with Mac, whom Derek dislikes. McGinley reveals he was disappointed by the storyline but found a silver lining. He could see where it was going while acting with Christa Miller and felt the passion, hurt, and pain, though it was tough given Derek’s usual positive nature.
For “Shrinking” season 2, the Derek and Liz storyline is a standout. Besides another character’s storyline, it’s one of the most surprising parts. Seeing Derek hurt elevates his character and lets the show explore him further. McGinley is a series regular in season 2 after recurring in season 1, allowing deeper exploration of Derek beyond his humorous side. The show’s balance of comedy and drama can be uneven, and this storyline leans into drama, highlighting relationship issues and the need for communication in a series about mental health.
McGinley’s comments is that he truly understands and embodies Derek. Since season 1, Derek has been funny yet deeply invested in others’ lives. McGinley has the humor and emotional intelligence to capture these aspects. He was more disappointed in how Derek let Liz down than in the storyline itself. His connection to Derek makes future storylines more appealing.
