Daniel Craig’s ‘Queer’ Beats ‘Wicked’ in Per Theater Box Office

by Barbara Miller

The musical Wicked continues to perform strongly at the box office, debuting at number one and grossing over $359 million worldwide despite facing competition from Gladiator II and Moana 2. However, Daniel Craig’s new film Queer has surpassed Wicked in one crucial area.

Directed by Luca Guadagnino, Queer stars Craig alongside a notable ensemble cast and is set in 1950s Mexico City. The film earned an impressive $190,000 from just seven screens, resulting in a per-theater average (PTA) of $27,000—outpacing Wicked’s PTA of $20,000.

Although Queer is a less widely recognized release compared to Wicked, its strong PTA performance signals potential for future success. This promising start gives hope to the film’s Oscar prospects as it expands to more theaters. If audience interest continues, Queer could see a substantial box office run.
