Eli Roth’s trampoline scene in Grindhouse is one of its most notorious moments. Grindhouse, released in 2007, is a double feature paying tribute to 1970s exploitation cinema, with Quentin Tarantino’s “Death Proof” and Robert Rodriguez’s “Planet Terror”. It also had faux trailers by horror directors, including Roth’s “Thanksgiving”.
At Fan Expo San Francisco, Roth talked about the now-iconic trampoline gag in “Thanksgiving”, where a cheerleader’s split on a trampoline ended gruesomely with a knife. He said it was a contest among directors to have the most shocking moment, and his trampoline scene won that, despite being costly due to the trampoline. It was a simple edit with no makeup or effects, yet people thought it was the sickest thing.
This scene reflects Roth’s mastery of the splatter genre, showing how creative, low-budget visual storytelling can outdo high-budget gore. His films like “Hostel” and “Cabin Fever” have established his reputation. The 2023 “Thanksgiving” expanded on the trailer’s story as social commentary. With “Thanksgiving 2” set to film in 2025, a franchise is emerging.
Roth’s trampoline gag is a great example of how simple setups can be unforgettable. His creativity in turning the trailer into a feature while keeping its charm shows his filmmaking skills. He consistently delivers scares that stay with audiences long after watching.
